What is the Purpose of a Breast Implant Exchange?
A breast implant exchange is a procedure performed on women who wish to make a change to their breast implants. There are a number of reasons why a woman may choose to have an implant exchange surgery. Some patients require a revision breast augmentation to correct the results of a past procedure. More commonly, however, the purpose is to switch out the current implants for a different size or type.
Benefits of Breast Implant Exchange
Over time, patients often find that their aesthetic tastes changes and they may wish to alter their appearance to match their new beauty goals. They may find that their current implants don’t fit with their current style or daily routine, so they wish to exchange them for a different shape, size, or material. Breast implant exchange is beneficial for women who:
- Wish to change the size of their implants
- Need to swap saline or silicone implants
- Are experiencing complications with their current implants
- Have medical issues, such as disease, trauma, or a surgical complication
Am I a Suitable Candidate?
If you have previously undergone a breast augmentation and had an implant rupture, shift out of place, or otherwise affect you, you will need a breast implant exchange to change it out for a suitable replacement. In most cases, if you have successfully had the procedure once, you will likely be eligible for an exchange. A consultation with Dr. Mang will help you understand if the surgery is right for you and how you should best go about it.
What Happens During a Breast Implant Exchange?
The procedure is fairly simple and is often performed similarly to the original breast augmentation. Whenever possible, Dr. Mang will use the site of the incisions from the previous surgery to minimize scarring. Once accessible, the original implant will be removed and, depending on the form of treatment agreed upon by you and the surgeon, the new implant will be inserted. Since the pocket for the implant is already prepared, the procedure is often easier and faster than a traditional augmentation.
Preparing for a Breast Implant Exchange Surgery
During your consultation with Dr. Mang, you should feel confident to speak freely about any questions or concerns as well as your beauty goals, medical history, and past procedures. He will assess your unique situation and offer you the most ideal solution to help you achieve your desired results. He will also provide you with a list of instructions that you should follow leading up to your surgery. You will be asked to disclose any vitamins, medications, or supplements you are currently taking and will be required to stop taking them prior to your procedure. Dr. Mang recommends patients begin using arnica before their procedure to help their body begin to reduce swelling and inflammation and help advance the healing process.
What Can Be Expected Following a Breast Implant Exchange?
Most patients will be able to comfortably return to work within a few days following the procedure. However, if your everyday activities require strenuous activity, you can expect to take at least a few weeks off.
As with most procedures, you will likely feel some slight discomfort throughout the healing process. As time passes, this will subside. Arnica is homeopathic herb with anti-inflammatory properties that can be applied directly to the affected area to help with swelling and bruising.
The recovery period for an implant exchange procedure is often shorter than a traditional breast implant surgery and typically lasts about a week. Swelling will fully subside within the first two weeks or so. However, if you continue to feel pain or discomfort, contact your surgeon immediately.
The amount of scarring will depend on many factors, including how the implant exchange was performed. Most patients will be able to appreciate their final results within six to 12 months.
Occasionally, the implants you have may not be suitable for your current taste, or they may be causing discomfort due to a shift in placement or a puncture.
