He is board certified under the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has been helping men and women in Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida, as well as Atlanta, Alpharetta, and the neighboring communities in Georgia restore their figure, and create a more contoured physique with liposuction.
What Happens During a Liposuction Procedure?
The liposuction procedure can typically take between 30 minutes to four hours depending on the technique performed and the amount of excess fat removed. Various types of anesthesia can be employed for liposuction including local tumescent anesthesia, conscious sedation anesthesia, and general anesthesia. Dr. Mang will discuss which type of anesthesia will best be suited for your specific situation.
The three surgical liposuction techniques most commonly used are:
Dr. Mang often uses power-assisted liposuction (PAL) when performing liposuction. This is his preferred method. Power-assisted liposuction uses the same technique as traditional liposuction, but with the addition of a vibrating tool that speeds up the breakdown of fat. This vibrating tool allows the fat to be removed easily in dense areas. Dr. Mang prefers this method because it leads to better results and a quicker recovery.
During tumescent liposuction the Dr. will fill the target areas with tumescent fluid that also acts as an anesthesia. The fat is than suctioned out using long thin rods. The procedure is done through a tiny incision that is typically hid within the creases of your skin.
This technique is similar to the tumescent liposuction technique in the fact that predefined areas are filled with tumescent fluid, but then ultrasonic energy is used to liquefy the fat before being removed. This energy is delivered via a rod that emits ultrasonic waves. Your surgeon next inserts the small rod through a tiny incision and massages the fatty tissue before suctioning it out. There are differences in time, costs, scars, and other risks.

Review With Dr. Mang
- Stop smoking. It is important to discontinue the use of cigarettes and other nicotine products as they constrict blood vessels and slow the healing and recovery process.
- Avoid alcohol. This is not long term, but alcohol use should be discontinued for at least two weeks before surgery and two weeks after surgery.
- Vitamins and other OTC drugs. Discontinue the use of these for at least two weeks before surgery.
- Pain medication. Dr. Mang may prescribe you pain medication to alleviate any discomfort. It is important to fill these prior to surgery and bring them to the procedure.
- Drink water. Water is a very helpful tool both before and after surgery. It is important to drink plenty of water before surgery and after. Water helps flush out toxins.
- Aspirin and Ibuprofen. Discontinue the use of both of these for at least two weeks before and after surgery. These products thin you blood and can interfere with your body’s ability to heal.
- Getting home. After surgery driving is prohibited. Arrange for transportation home.
What To Expect After Surgery
Work: You should expect to be out of work for one to two weeks.
Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising after liposuction is at it’s greatest up to three days after surgery. In some instances the swelling can seem to migrate to other parts of the body but this is normal. A week into your surgery we recommend getting some light exercise via walking to help with the swelling. Dr. Mang advises his patients to use the herb arnica to help prevent and minimize swelling and bruising
Showering: Immediately after surgery the treated area needs to stay dry but during your follow-up appointment Dr. Mang can clear you for surgery.
Discomfort: Immediately after surgery you will experienced some discomfort, but it will get better every day, especially once you begin walking and getting light exercise. Pain medication can help with any discomfort in the initial days after surgery.
Recovery: When you leave our center after the surgery you may have a drainage tube in place to prevent fluid buildup. If you received stitches they should be dissolved within five to 10 days. Some of our patients are required to wear a compression garment after surgery. In every case you should avoid strenous activities for at least a month.
Results: Each patient heals and scars differently. It is vital to keep in mind that the results of this procedure vary from patient to patient. However, most patients will enjoy their final results within two to six months.
