What is PRP Therapy?

PRP or platelet-rich plasma therapy is an exciting new treatment that is currently considered the most advanced treatment method for regenerating skin cells naturally. PRP therapy harnesses your body’s natural healing capacity to improve, enhance, and rejuvenate your skin. PRP therapy is usually administered as an injection treatment using platelet-rich plasma isolated from your own blood.

What Does PRP Therapy Treat?

In clinical applications, PRP therapy has demonstrated its efficacy in improving a wide variety of generic skin conditions; however, it is widely recommended specifically in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Acne and acne scars
  • Crow’s feet or smile lines at the corners of the eyes
  • Dark circles underneath the eyes
  • Lines, wrinkles, creases, and folds in the skin
  • Loose flaccid skin on the face, throat, and chest
  • Stretch marks
  • Sun spots, age spots, and sun damage
  • Uneven skin texture

How Does the PRP Therapy Treatment Work?

PRP therapy treatment requires several steps. First, a blood sample is drawn and placed in a centrifuge where it spins at a very high speed, separating the plasma from the blood. Calcium chloride is then added to the isolated plasma, causing it to “activate” or release its natural growth factors. This activated plasma is then injected directly into the treatment area, triggering increased production of collagen as well as a series of healing processes as your own blood platelets gradually promote the release of new stem cells in your skin, revealing fresh, new skin cells. PRP therapy provokes a reaction in your body similar to the healing response that takes place after an injury, causing the body to produce healthy new tissue to heal itself. Over a period of weeks or months, you will begin to appreciate a gradual but dramatic rejuvenation and healing of the skin, with visibly improved tone, texture, firmness, and luminosity.

Who Can Most Benefit From a PRP Treatment?

PRP therapy is extremely safe because the substance used is derived from your own body and therefore highly unlikely to produce any adverse reaction. PRP therapy may not be suitable for certain individuals with medical conditions affecting the blood, such as bone or blood cancers, hemophilia, or anemia.

How Should I Prepare for a PRP Treatment?

Dr. Mang will advise you during your intake consultation as to how best to prepare for any procedure you will be undergoing. You may have to suspend the use of certain medications, such as prescription blood thinners or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), for several days before and after treatment. Dr. Mang will also recommend that you avoid smoking and alcohol to help your body heal optimally. Arnica, a natural homeopathic remedy, may be used to assist in the healing process.

What Can I Expect After PRP Therapy?

Immediately after the procedure, you can expect to experience a bit of soreness and redness in your skin, similar to a sunburn, and in some cases, you may also have minor bruising. This reaction may last for several days, but most symptoms will clear up naturally within about seven days.

Most patients require no recovery period following PRP therapy, and you should be able to resume normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

You will notice dramatic improvements within a few days after treatment, but the most significant improvements will become visible after two or three months, when vibrant new skin cells will have your skin glowing with increased firmness, smoothness, and radiance.

Will I Need Follow-Up PRP Treatments?

The results of a PRP treatment may last one to two years, depending on several factors such as your age, weight, lifestyle, and how well you care for your skin. Typically, to maintain optimal results, a follow-up treatment will be recommended after a year or two.
