What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is nose surgery (a nose job) performed on thousands of patients yearly to correct a variety of irregularities, deformities, or imperfections of the nose, as well as to alter its size, shape, and position. Rhinoplasty can also be performed to correct structural issues resulting from trauma, injuries, prior surgeries, and hereditary conditions such as a deviated septum that may impair normal breathing.
Who is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is one of the world’s most frequently performed facial plastic surgery procedures, and it is performed on a variety of individuals for a number of reasons, such as to correct breathing function or reposition the nostrils. Basically, a rhinoplasty may be suitable for anyone who wishes to change anything in the physical structure of their nose. Some patients, such as members of the Asian community, may require the use of a special technique that uses silicone implants or ribs to create a bridge. Dr. Mang is highly experienced in these types of surgeries.
How Should I Prepare for Rhinoplasty?
The first step in preparing for your rhinoplasty procedure is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mang to discuss your condition and aesthetic goals. You may need to suspend taking certain medications in preparation for the procedure, and Dr. Mang recommends the use of arnica, a homeopathic remedy, to help your body adapt to the process of surgery.
Types of Rhinoplasty procedures
Since every surgery is customized to each patient, there are several techniques that may be used to perform rhinoplasty. It is important that you entrust your surgical care to an experienced and qualified surgeon, such as Dr. Mang, who has extensive experience performing the many varieties of rhinoplasty procedures. They include:
- Open Rhinoplasty. Most surgeries are done using this technique because it allows the surgeon full and easy access to the nasal structure.
- Closed Rhinoplasty. This procedure uses no external incisions and therefore permits less direct access to the internal skeletal tissue. The advantage of closed rhinoplasty is that it leaves no visible scars.
What Can I Expect After Rhinoplasty?
We recommend that you plan to rest fully for a few days and arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure. You should plan to take up to a week off work.
Immediately following your surgery, you can expect to feel some degree of soreness, aching, and swelling. You will have to keep your head elevated for 24 hours to reduce swelling, even as your sleep. After about 10 days, you will begin to appreciate the results of your procedure as swelling gradually subsides. After about two weeks, assuming all swelling has subsided, you may slowly resume gentle physical activities, slowly and gradually increasing exertion over the next few weeks.
The results of your procedure will begin to reveal themselves as the healing process commences. Each patient heals and scars differently, so the results will vary.
